Rep. Brian Burnett provides update on statewide flooding response

‘I am extremely grateful that President Trump has allowed federal assistance to move forward,’ says Burnett

Rep. Brian Burnett continues to closely monitor the catastrophic flooding affecting communities on both sides of the Cascade Mountains. In response to the ongoing emergency, the 12th Legislative District state representative has participated in daily, high-level briefings with Governor Bob Ferguson, his administration, Emergency Management Division leadership, Tribal representatives, and local, state, and federal officials.

“Central and Western Washington communities are facing devastating conditions,” said Burnett, R-Wenatchee. “Our priorities are ensuring emergency resources are deployed quickly and accurately, communication remains strong, and that every impacted resident receives the support they need. We are staying fully engaged with state and federal partners as conditions evolve.”

Torrential rains have caused extensive damage throughout Central and Western Washington, stranded residents on rooftops, washed out bridges, damaged homes, and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands across the state.

“We are grateful for the swift work of local first responders, Tribal emergency teams, county emergency managers, and state personnel who have been working around the clock,” said Burnett. “Individuals and groups from multiple jurisdictions are responding to this crisis and using their extensive knowledge and training to assist our communities.”

Burnett, who previously served three terms as the elected Chelan County Sheriff, has extensive experience in emergency management and response. His office’s resources were frequently loaned out and used by other municipalities during times of need. That experience, he says, has allowed him to understand how to work with other elected officials and government managers to bring people together quickly to address the immediate needs of each individual emergent situation.

With yesterday’s announcement that President Donald Trump approved Washington’s request for an emergency declaration, Burnett said critical federal assistance will now be unlocked as communities continue to face this historic flooding.

“When emergencies like these take place, governments at every level have a responsibility to do what they can to save lives and help our citizens and communities,” said Burnett. “I am extremely grateful that President Trump has allowed federal assistance to move forward. Responding to a crisis like this takes a proactive commitment from both the state and the federal government as well as an acknowledgement that neither must bear the full weight and responsibility alone.

“This federal declaration brings needed resources, but the recovery will take time. We encourage all residents in affected areas to follow local emergency instructions and stay alert as conditions continue to change,” he said.
