Democrats could overturn elections if this bill becomes law, says Rep. Brian Burnett
Senate Bill 5974 would give a state board the power to overturn the will of voters and remove elected sheriffs in Washington state.
House Republicans, including Rep. Brian Burnett, R-Chelan, strongly oppose SB 5974. We believe the citizens of Washington should retain the right to elect their own sheriffs.
To that end, Burnett, a former Chelan County Sheriff, is sponsoring House Bill 2387 – a commonsense reform supported by the sheriffs themselves. It would clarify the authority of elected sheriffs who are not certified peace officers and ensure voters have a clear path to accountability when a sitting sheriff loses required law enforcement certification.
